Telangana: Teenage girl, trapped in the name of love, dies during abortion procedure

Kothagudem: The death of a teenage girl while undergoing an abortion procedure in the district town of Bhadrachalam on Friday sparked protests from Adivasi associations and the girl’s family.

The girl, a second year student and five months pregnant, was reportedly admitted to a private hospital by her boyfriend, Bhukya Nanda Naik from Pusugudem at Mulkalapalli mandal in the district.

He allegedly tricked VR Ramavaram’s daughter into promising to marry her and developed physical intimacy with her. Upon learning that she was five months pregnant, the young man would have administered tablets to her, without her knowledge, to terminate her pregnancy.

As she began to bleed, he rushed her to a private hospital in the city. He told the doctors there that the girl was his wife and they wanted to abort the pregnancy. Doctors at the hospital reportedly performed an abortion procedure on her.

But her condition became critical as she had convulsions and died, after which Nanda Naik fled. The hospital authorities then informed the girl’s parents, who in turn called 100 and informed the police of the incident.

Police booked a case and were looking for the youngster. Bhadrachalam Adivasi Samithi activists, the girl’s parents and family members staged a dharna at the Sri Suraksha Multi-Specialty Hospital demanding action against the hospital and the arrest of the youngster.
